Haiku from the Headlines #4: Poetry Month Edition

April is Poetry Month! And I'm taking up the 30-day challenge to write one poem a day! There are different ways to take up the challenge. Some people follow prompts, write collective poems, and there's a website to help: National Poetry Writing Month. I'm gonna complete the challenge by continuing the Haiku from the Headlines series. I'll also be sharing a poem a day over on the Facebook and the Twitter. This is first entry.

8 Black World Leaders from T&T

The Atlanta Black Star is a great site for lists - about things that have to do with black people. Some of their lists are more serious than others (and some more disturbing). "12 Real, Graphic and Disturbing Photos of Atrocities From European Imperialism/Domination" needs to be clicked on with caution. Other lists like "7 Black Female Thought Leaders the History Books Ignore" and "32 Celebs You Didn't Know Were of Caribbean Descent" are generally informative. Well, reading one of these lists got me thinking and the end result was a list of my own: 10 Black World Leaders from Trinidad & Tobago. Check it out!

Re-defining Violence in T&T

Child rights activist Hazel Thompson-Ahye made some sound points in her Trinidad Express column last week. She identified the fact that many of the responses to the recent upsurge in school violence have been "strident and ill-advised." Thompson-Ahye is referring to is a taped fight between schoolgirls at the Mucurapo West Secondary School.

Fight is probably too soft a word to describe what was an all out brawl, that was readily view-able on YouTube and Facebook (and which also made it's way onto the evening news with glaring disregard for media ethics). The brawl showed the young ladies who were fighting had a blatant disregard for authority, as they cursed and beat not only each other, but also the off-duty police officer who stepped in to part the altercation. This behavior is not isolated, however.
